Q&A's
What inspired you to pursue a career in the automation industry, and how did you get started in this field?
The fourth industrial revolution is accelerating, and the manufacturing world is being reshaped by data, connectivity, and intelligent systems. What inspired me—and continues to drive me—is the opportunity to connect high-level strategic thinking with practical, on-the-ground transformation. I’ve seen time and again how the smart use of data and automation can optimise operations, reduce waste, and unlock real business impact.
Many companies struggle to translate boardroom ambition into real-world outcomes. What attracted me to this field was the chance to bridge that gap—to help businesses not only understand what's possible, but implement it in a way that delivers measurable value. As manufacturing becomes increasingly digital, only those who can connect vision with execution will truly thrive.
What do you enjoy most about working at ITS, and what sets you apart from other automation businesses in the industry?
What drew me to this sector, and to ITS in particular, is the opportunity to help these organisations realise the full value of automation and data—through clear strategy, disciplined execution, and strong governance.
In my role as a Non-Executive Director, I focus on ensuring the company stays aligned with its mission: helping clients bridge the gap between boardroom vision and operational reality. That means supporting leadership in building the right capabilities, shaping market approach, and delivering outcomes that truly matter.
With ITS’s new ownership, there is a clear commitment to transformation—not only in the systems we deliver, but in how we help clients lead change, reduce risk, and compete in a world defined by pace and precision. I see my role as helping to guide that journey—bringing experience, perspective, and challenge to ensure we’re making the right long-term decisions for the business and our clients.
What do you like to do outside of work to unwind and recharge, and how do you balance your personal and professional life?
Now semi-retired, I’m fortunate to have more time to enjoy the things that have long fascinated me—like electronics, software development, and amateur radio. I also have a deep interest in vintage hi-fi restoration, and spend many hours restoring classic audio equipment and listening to music from my extensive vinyl collection. There’s something uniquely satisfying about the sound and craftsmanship of older systems brought back to life.
Cycling is another passion. I’ve completed the ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and I’m currently in the process of moving to Belgium to join my long-term partner—something I’m very much looking forward to. With Flanders being the spiritual home of cycling (and the birthplace of the great Eddy Merckx), I can’t wait to enjoy the roads, the cobbles, and the culture that celebrates the sport like nowhere else.
These hobbies keep me mentally and physically active, and help me maintain a healthy balance—providing space to recharge while still staying connected to the industries and ideas that matter to me.
